You may be asking the same question that I
did, when I heard the term "Orthomolecular
Medicine". What exactly does that mean? Please keep reading for
an explanation and what Dr. Richard McCaw's expert
opinion is.
What is
Orthomolecular Medicine?
Orthomolecular
medicine, sometimes called megavitamin therapy, is the practice of
treating and preventing disease by using natural substances such as
vitamins, minerals, ammoniac's, enzymes, and coenzymes to allow the
body to reach peak mental, emotional, and physical health and
stability.
Orthomolecular
medicine was developed into a therapy in the 1960s by Linus Pauling
who coined the term orthomolecular. The idea of treating disease in
this was first contemplated and utilized in the 1920s when vitamins
and minerals were used to treat illnesses unrelated to any nutrient
deficiency. Scientific support for this practice did not appear
until the 1950s when two physicians began treating some
schizophrenics with Vitamin B3 (niacin). Studies showed that niacin
in combination with other therapies doubled the number of recoveries
from schizophrenia in a one year period.
Who is
Linus Pauling?
Linus Pauling
was one of the greatest scientists of the twentieth century. He is
the only person to have won two Nobel Prizes. He was awarded the
Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954 for this work on the genetic
influences on the molecular structure of proteins in hemoglobin. He
also discovered that sickle cell anemia was caused by a genetic
defect. He was awarded a second Nobel Prize for Peace for his
efforts to stop nuclear testing. He had a devotion to pacifism and
in 1958 he presented a petition which was signed by 11,000
scientists concerned about the biological danger of radioactive
fallout from nuclear weapons testing.
Pauling founded
the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine in Palo Alto,
California in 1973.
The Linus
Pauling Institute was established at Oregon State University in
August 1996 under an agreement reached between OSU and its
antecedent organization, the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and
Medicine (located in California from 1973 to 1996). The Institute
functions from the basic premise that an optimum diet is the key to
optimum health. Their stated mission is to understand the molecular
mechanisms and physiological effects of nutritional factors; to
determine the function and role of micronutrients, vitamins and
phytochemicals in maintaining health and preventing and treating
disease; and to continue the pioneering efforts of Dr. Pauling in
nutrition research.
What are
the principles of Orthomolecular Medicine?
|
15
principles that identify the spirit of orthomolecular medicine: |
|
1.
|
It comes first in medical
diagnosis and treatment as it gives the knowledge for the safe
and effective use of nutrients, enzymes, hormones, antigens,
antibodies and other naturally occurring molecules |
|
2.
|
Orthmolecules have a low risk of
toxicity |
|
3.
|
Therapeutic trial and dose is
considered a more practical test than lab tests, as they aren't
always accurate. Even blood tests do not necessarily reflect
nutrient levels of specific organs and tissues
|
|
4.
|
Biochemical individuality is a
central precept of orthomolecular medicine. The search for
optimal nutrient doses is a practical issue. Mega doses (large
doses) of normal nutrients are at times effective but this can
only be determined by therapeutic trial |
|
5.
|
The Recommended Daily Allowance
(RDA) of US food and nutrition board is intended for healthy
people. People with illnesses are not normal or healthy and may
not be adequately served by the baseline recommendations of RDA |
|
6.
|
Environmental pollution of air,
water and food is common. Thus a high " index of suspicion" is
mandatory in every case and diagnostic research for toxic
pollutants is justified |
|
7.
|
Optimal health is a lifetime
challenge. As biochemical needs change from time to time, our
orthomolecular prescriptions too need to be changed based on
follow-up, repeated testing and therapeutic trials |
|
8.
|
Nutrient related disorders are
always treatable and deficiencies are usually curable. To ignore
their existence should be considered malpractice. |
|
9.
|
Some. Hereditary disorders are
quite responsive to orthomolecular treatment |
|
10.
|
Patient reports are often
reliable. The patient must listen to his body, the physician
must listen to his patient |
|
11.
|
The patient should not be denied
orthomolecular treatment which should be part of the informed
consent |
|
12.
|
If a treatment is known to be safe
and effective, a therapeutic trial should be initiated |
|
13.
|
The patient must be informed about
his condition and must be provided full access to all technical
information. His right to freedom of medicine must be respected. |
|
14.
|
Health is not just being free from
ailments but also a state of physical, mental, emotional and
social well being |
|
15.
|
Therapeutic and orthomolecular
therapies are always there as a source of hope so long as there
is no misrepresentation or deception. |

Dr.
Richard
McCraw is a Orthomolecular Scientist who has been practicing in his field for
19 years. His vitamin and nutrients formulations have enabled
literally thousands of people world wide to regain their health from the
minor to very serious diseases, when other treatment(s) failed.
Dr. McCraw is a Christian and definitely believes in the supernatural
healing power of Jesus Christ, The Great Physician (Matt.
4:23; Matt. 8:14-15; Matt. 9:1-2:). He also states "In my opinion God
has given us something natural to counter act anything that attacks
the temple" (I Cor. 3:16), speaking of the natural nutrients that are found
in God's creation.
One of the products that Dr. McCraw has developed is Angstrum Silver.
Angstrum is the only mineral that he recommends a person take. Colloidal Silver
is another product that Dr. McCraw has developed. It is 4 million
times smaller in
particle size than other similar products and it does not have the jagged cells
that could possibly damage the circulatory system. Since it is so much
smaller, much greater absorption can take place.
While Dr. McCraw knows how many vitamins and minerals can extrordinaryly
benefit us, he also warns of infomercials that portray a one vitamin/mineral
cure all.
Jesus came to this world to perform a ministry of healing. This was an
essential element of his ministry and vocation. It is for Dr. McCraw as
well.

Four Seasons Evangelism's Statement on
Orthomolecular Medicine:
Natural vitamins and minerals can provide many health benefits. All
the information above about Orthomolecular Medicine and Dr. Richard McCraw
is not an endorsement, but has been made available to you for your choice as
a possible way of treating sickness and maintaining good health.
Please consult a trusted physician before starting any medication or
treatment plan.
Many New Testament believers did not
necessarily live disease-free lives for example Paul (2 Cor 12:7), Timothy
(1 Tim 5:23), Trophimus (2 Tim 4:20) and Epaphroditus (Phil 2:27).
At all times our lives are in God's hands, and He may allow ill-health in
order that, like Paul, we may say: "Most gladly will I glory in my
infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me" (2 Cor 12:9). This
has been the experience of many Christians in all ages. Although, when
we do become ill, we do have God given medications that may possibly help us
greatly, until our life ceases here on earth.
Much of the above information concerning
Orthomolecular Medicine can be found at
Essential Health Network. Four Seasons Evangelism does not endorse
this site in it's entirety, nor does it agree with any treatment or healing
that goes against the teaching of the Bible.
